FAQs
Compostable mailers
What are minliving compostable mailers made of?
A blend of PBAT and modified cornstarch. PBAT binds the renewable ingredients together. The finished mailer is certified home compostable (TÜV Austria OK compost HOME) and industrially compostable (EN 13432).
Are the mailers padded?
No, they're non-padded. A padded version is in development.
What's new in the upgraded mailers?
A perforated tear line so you can open them without scissors, a reorganized back design that keeps the composting info readable even when folded for reuse, and stronger adhesive strips that make them tamper-evident.
Where do you ship mailers?
The US and Canada.
How do I compost them?
Remove labels and tape, cut the mailer into strips, and add it to a home compost bin with brown and green materials at about 3:1. Turn it regularly. You can also drop them at a commercial composting program. See How it works for the full guide.
Can I get custom-printed mailers?
Yes, with a minimum order of 10,000 bags per size. See Custom printing.
Why do they have a scent?
Cornstarch has a natural scent. It doesn't transfer to what's inside, and leaving the mailers open for a day or two reduces it.
Compostable vs. biodegradable: what's the difference?
"Biodegradable" has no set timeframe or standard. "Certified compostable" means the material has been tested to a standard (for us, OK compost HOME and EN 13432) to break down in a composting facility within a set time.
What if a mailer ends up in a landfill?
Like most materials, compostable packaging isn't designed to break down in a landfill. The best end of life is reuse first, then a commercial composting program.
What's the shelf life?
9–12 months stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. For bulk orders we recommend buying 3–6 months' worth of shipments at a time.
Resealable bags
Can I use resealable bags as shipping mailers?
No. They're translucent, so use them to protect clothing and accessories inside a compostable mailer.
How many times can I reuse one?
As many times as you like, until it loses strength. Then compost it.
What else can I use them for?
Storage for masks or craft supplies, small bin liners, or picking up after pets.
Biodegradable tape
Is the clear tape really eco-friendly?
Yes. It's made from plant-derived cellulose film with natural rubber adhesive, comes in biodegradable packaging, and reaches 85% biodegradability in 180 days.
Can I get custom-printed tape?
Yes, with a minimum order quantity. Contact us for details.
Does the tape have a shelf life?
Use it within two years and store it somewhere cool, away from direct sunlight.
Silicone sleeves
What jars do they fit?
8oz sleeves fit Ball and Kerr regular mouth jars. 16oz sleeves come in two versions, regular mouth and wide mouth. Other jars of similar size may also fit.
Regular mouth vs. wide mouth?
Regular mouth jars taper at the top and bottom and have a narrower opening. The 8oz size only comes in regular mouth.
What's special about the 16oz sleeves?
They're extra thick for added protection and help hold heat in, so drinks stay warm longer with the lid on.
Do they absorb smells?
Strong smells like coffee or chocolate can linger. Rinse with hot water, wash with white vinegar or lemon, or soak in baking soda and hot water.
Are they dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe?
Yes, all three.
Why is there white residue after washing?
That's harmless mineral residue from hard water. Soak the sleeve in distilled white vinegar for about 30 minutes, rinse, and dry with a microfiber cloth.
Why is the volume window so small?
Keeping more of the jar covered helps hold the temperature of what's inside.
